Organisers of the electronic dance event, which French DJ David Guetta was due to headline, this morning confirmed it was being suspended “with the aim of guaranteeing the security of spectators, staff and performers”.
The first confirmed fatality is believed to be a 28-year-old man.
Latest reports said dozens of people were hurt, with three suffering serious trauma injuries, who are currently being treated at various hospitals in the area.
Several other heavy metallic structures, including the entrance billboard, are reported to have come down in the storm that brought about the chaos at the five-day festival in the popular resort town of Cullera.
Gusts are said to have reached around 51mph.
The event, which was due to attract around 320,000 revellers across the long weekend, was evacuated at around 4am.
Footage of the drama showed revellers trying to take refuge as a sandstorm engulfed the concert area, as well as police attending to one of the victims lying on the ground.
DJ David Guetta, Steve Aoki and Afrojack had been announced as some of the headline acts at this year’s festival, the first since the easing of coronavirus restrictions.
Guetta, who has over 10 million albums and 65 million single sales globally, was due to perform today.
DJ Miguel Serna was on the main stage for his 3am till 4am set when the tragedy unfolded.
“It was a tense few minutes, I’ve never experienced anything like it before,” he wrote in an Instagram story.
“The tragedy happened just at the end of my session on the main stage, just below it, which was the most affected (area). It was a few moments of horror, I am still in shock.”

“We are in a state of shock because we were 30 meters away (from the stage). It could have been me, it could have been anyone,” Jesus Carretero, who was at the festival with his brother, told TVE.
“We are completely devastated and saddened at what happened this morning,” the organisers said on the festival’s Facebook page.
They said “extraordinary” weather conditions had caused damage to various infrastructure on the festival site.
“At around four in the morning unexpected and violent strong winds destroyed certain areas of the festival, forcing management to make the immediate decision to vacate the concert area to guarantee the safety of attendees, workers and artists,” they said.
The festival was suspended for the time being as a result, bosses added.
“This is a terrible accident that has stunned us all,” Valencia’s regional president, Ximo Puig, tweeted.
